Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. We had a quiet, peaceful Thanksgiving, but it wasn’t from everyone eating so much turkey. We actually had Mexican food - Spanish rice, beans, rolled tacos, and cheese dip - which was wonderful. I think we’re all holiday-ed out until Christmas.
After a few days of rest and family-time, it’s time to give all the fans on blog-world an update on how our holidays went. Ah, but don’t worry, I’ll help you around all the leftovers in blog-world.

Homeschool Tip: Unit Studies
“Plan your unit studies to encourage your students to think. For example if you are studying Thanksgiving or the Pilgrims, do not just require your student to write a “book report” about a well-known Pilgrim. Encourage your students to write a story about the First Thanksgiving or their favorite Pilgrim. If you are teaching more than one student, encourage them to act out a scene from the First Thanksgiving. Incorporate hands-on activities and craft projects that relate to that particular unit study or topic. Kids are motivated by hands-on activities and lessons.”

Saturday Scripture: The Essence of Thanksgiving
Written by SuperAngel on November 24, 2007 – 12:00 am -I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving time with your family. We had a non-traditional one with ours, but all the same a very great time.
I was thinking about being thankful and I didn’t want to just post about everything that I am thankful for, because everyone is doing that. I want to do something special to show how grateful I am. I am still actually thinking about what to do and yes, I know Thanksgiving is over, but as my good friend, Paulie said in his post, “Why do we have one day dedicated to giving thanks?“.
What he said is very true. Why do we only have one day a year that we recognize that we need to be thankful?? We should be thankful and show it everyday. Not just on the last Thursday in November every year.
Mom did a great post on “Thankfulness, Gratitude, Gratefulness“, and she gave me a little inspiration to go a little deeper into what thanksgiving really means.
Thanksgiving is:
1. the act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors, esp. to God.
2. an expression of thanks, esp. to God.
3. a public celebration in acknowledgment of divine favor or kindness.
4. a day set apart for giving thanks to God.
So pretty much thanksgiving is about God. Guess the Pilgrims had the right idea about the very essence of what Thanksgiving is really about. It was all about God to them.
They were thankful to God for bringing them safely from Europe. They were thankful for the freedom to worship God the way they wanted. They were thankful that God still protected them even after they got to America. They were thankful that He sent the Indians to help them.
They were thankful to God for everything.
In writing this post, I thought I would take a look at what the Bible says about thanksgiving. Because really we have strayed soo far in our society from what Thanksgiving is really about.
We get caught up in our holidays, that I don’t think we really take the time to realize what they really mean. I mean, we went from halloween decorations to Christmas ones. Thanksgiving isn’t really something anyone takes the time to ponder on. That is because we are an unthankful people.
Leviticus 22:29
“And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will.”
But that does not mean to do it once a year or even when you just feel like it. It means offer it of your own will. We should not have to be told that we need to be thankful or even show it. We need to do it of our own volition. God is not a god that makes his people do what they are supposed to. He wants us to do it because we are thankful and we love Him and want to show it.
The Bible talks a lot about thanksgiving, so it must be important to God. David had a lot to say about thanksgiving, and I think he must have known that it was something that God really wants from His people.
God loves it when we praise His name, but He loves it even more when we praise it with thanksgiving. Here are some verses that talk about that:
Psalm 69:30
“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.”Psalm 147:7
“Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:”
I really loved this one. Not only do we sing and praise God’s name, but when we do, we can magnify it by doing it with thanksgiving.
Psalm 95:2
“Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.”
Psalm 100:4-5
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
When we come to God, we should come with thanksgiving to Him. We should not just come only with requests and praises, but also come with thanksgiving to Him.
Psalm 107:22
“And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing”Psalm 116:17
“I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.”
When we give thanksgiving to God it declares His wondrous works and we should rejoice in the fact that we can give Him praise that will show everyone that He is worthy of all our thanks.
Jonah 2:9
“But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.“
Our thanksgiving praise to God is something that we should not take lightly. There is so much that we have to be thankful for just to God.
2 Corinthians 9:11
“Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.”
We are truly a blessed people. Our blessings flow from God. We should automatically be giving thanks to God for everything.
Philippians 4:6
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
This verse is pretty well known I think, but have you noticed that it says, “Be careful for nothing.” What does that mean?? I am going to think to think on that one for a bit, but I had never noticed that it said that before and I wonder what it means.
Do you know what supplication means?? I have heard supplication used in the Bible a lot, but not really understood what it meant. It means: an act or instance of supplicating; humble prayer, entreaty, or petition. Not only are we supposed to pray for everything, but we are to pray with thanksgiving. That is the way we should come to God.
Colossians 4:2
“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;”
It is repeated over and over in the Scriptures that we are to come to God with thanksgiving. We should not just come to Him with what we want, but we should always be THANKING Him.
Revelation 7:12
“Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.”
Lastly we when we are finished with our prayers, we are to end with thanksgiving too. Giving thanks to God forever and ever.
Everything should begin and end with thanksgiving to God. This Thanksgiving season, let’s not only show our thankfulness on November 22nd, but everyday for the rest of our lives.
Not only is it pleasing to God to receive our thanksgiving, but it is a way we can show Him how much He means to us. Now you don’t want to do that only once a year do you??
As Always,

Happy Thanksgiving
Written by bunnytrails on November 22, 2007 – 1:09 am -“As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common, everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness — just the pure air to breathe and the strength to breathe it; just warmth and shelter and home folks; just plain food that gives us strength; the bright sunshine on a cold day; and a cool breeze when the day is warm.”
Laura Ingalls Wilder
May you consider the common, everyday things for which you are thankful today. May you have a greater awareness of the small blessings that may be overlooked. May you nurture a heart of gratitude today and in the days to come.
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1Thessalonians 5:18

Tuesday Tour W/SoCalVal
Written by socalval on November 20, 2007 – 3:03 am -
Warm rolls with butter, turkey legs and cranberry sauce, family chatter all around… these are the wonderful things that make Thanksgiving so special. Many homeschool families are taking the week off from teaching to spend time with friends and family, while others are tackling these three days with mini-unit studies on the holiday and fun crafts. Both are enjoyable.
Our tour today will take you through blog-land with Thanksgiving on the mind.
Several wonderful blogs are featuring special Holiday themed projects. You’ve got to check them out!!! For example, Camelot Homestead Academy has great holiday ideas just for kids. Everything from making holiday aprons to making jingle bells! Eclectic Education has free Thanksgiving notebooking paper and HSBiz has FREE worksheets, puzzles and fun information on Christopher Columbus. Don’t forget Homeschool Shares, you can find great unit studies, put together by mom’s like you, for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just great stuff!!! Be sure to take the time and browse through these great sites!!!
Another great way to find out more about holiday events, projects and unit studies, is to tour through The Homeschool Carnival. This weeks Homeschool Carnival is hosted by HomeSchoolBuzz. If you have never stopped by to read these creative posts, be sure to do so. Nearly 50 homeschool bloggers submit a post to the carnival each week!!! Lots to be enjoyed. Last week’s carnival featured field trips, Fall sports and much more. I’m so excited to see what this week’s carnival has in store!
Well, I hope you enjoyed this tour on your Tuesday. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving. Hug your children and spouse extra tight, pray for our Nation, and eat lots of turkey.

Memo Monday: Thankful For Homeschooling
Written by Jacque on November 19, 2007 – 4:16 am -
Wow… I just realized Thanksgiving is this Thursday. Yes, sometimes life just flies by, and things are upon us me before we I even know it. Funny how that happens as we are living life, isn’t it? But, before I get to deciding if we are going to go with the traditional turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy or rolled tacos, tortillas and beans and rice, I have a few things to share.
Thankfulness. It is a theme you almost miss these days, since even the retailers go directly from halloween to christmas sales. Even the younger bloggers have noticed this, and they have their own opinion about it. I was reading about it over at The Voice of Experience. I’ll tell you, the more I blog about things that happen in the public school system, the more I am thankful I homeschool.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Homeschool News
My news really isn’t news at all. It isn’t ‘new’ news, anyway. My homeschool news is how thankful we must be to have the freedom to home school in this country. That though we are all homeschoolers, we are all different. Whether we are Believers in Jesus as the Savior of the world, or we are atheist and adhere to that belief or anywhere in-between, we are all homeschoolers,
and we do have much to learn from each other. Even if it only is to be human and respectful and try to see each others’ perspectives.
I am not saying you will or even can agree with me on my views, because I come on strong in my own particular way most of the times. I am, however, thankful I am still allowed to exercise my right to educate my children at home. I am thankful Matt and I as their parents can choose by what means we educate them and have a support group of family and friends as we do so. I am thankful you are free to educate your children, regardless of what your belief in teaching them is.
Our freedoms as people and especially as parents are being legislated away every time we turn around in our great nation, and we can be thankful that we are homeschoolers, because, in some countries, we would either be in jail or fleeing for our lives for choosing to home educate. I am choosing to thank God for this freedom.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Homeschool Freebies
I found some great free Thanksgiving printables and games and such online at About.com homeschooling. Beverley Hernandez has put together a whole page of things to do for us to print off for our younger children.
Here are some of what she has:
- Thanksgiving Wordsearch
- Thanksgiving Vocabulary
- Thanksgiving Crossword Puzzle
- Thanksgiving Challenge
- Thanksgiving Alphabet Activity
- Thanksgiving Door Hangers
- Thanksgiving Draw and Write
- Thanksgiving Coloring Page - Thanksgiving Turkey
- Thanksgiving Coloring Page - Cornucopia
- Thanksgiving Theme Paper - I am thankful for…
Be sure to visit her page for other Thanksgiving links too.

Curriculum Review
Being thankful, as I am, for homeschoolers who have gone before and have written parent resources to encourage us, I am going to share a few I think are just excellent.
The Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola - What can I say about this? This is well-known by many seasoned homeschoolers, but I wonder how many new homeschoolers have been introduced to the world of Miss Mason? It is full of a new way to teach, a gentle way to learn. I felt cheated when I finally found this book after I had been teaching our children at home for 13 years. That is the time from Amanda’s birth we had been teaching her everything from crawling to singing to reading. There is so much in this book about the teaching ‘mindset’. It is a real treasure.
Another book I wish I would have been introduced to when my children were little is Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson. It is along the same lines of gentle teaching and learning your child’s way of learning, but it has more Biblical direction from the get-go. There are helpful ideas, examples from their own family and things to get you started.
These two books really complement each other.
Then there are the Doorposts books - We use Polished Cornerstones, Plants Grown Up and For Instruction in Righteousness. If you want to gently focus on the hearts of your children by memorizing the Word of God, then you will want to at least look at these.. If you want to train them up in the LORD, these are made to be very simple or as complex as you want. Each activity is classified as to what subject it fits into, i.e: Bible, writing, history, etc. They work for several different ages, which makes them a resource you will use over and over and for several children at once. Our older girls have gained an appreciation for these lessons and are able to complete a lot of them on their own.
And, just to throw this in there… because it warms my heart to think about it is Pocketful of Pinecones by Karen Andreola. I have been thinking of getting it out again, because it is so full of nature and lovely little outdoors-y-ness. It is a delightful little book that walks you through one mother’s days as she delights in and enjoys her children.
Another ‘outdoors-y’ book was given to me by my dear friend, Jill Novak. This wonderful book is called Wings and Stings. I’m just throwing that in there for free, because it is all about outdoors creatures. Spiders teaching about their ways and birds telling stories on the other birds. It is also a delightful little book with beautiful little sketches. It is a lovely way to teach science.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Carnival Reminders
NerdMom is hosting the current Homeschooling Carnival, I AmThankful Edition, but tomorrow, it will be traveling to Homeschool Buzz.
Also, the current edition of The Charlotte Mason Carnival is carnivaling at On Our Journey Westward, The Thankful Homeschooling Edition.
Don’t forget the Homesteading Carnival. Jocelyn is hosting it at Amusing Reflections of A Country Girl, and is sure to do a dandy job on it. She’s so homestead-y!

Homeschool Tip
Homeschool your children in every moment of your life. Don’t think that because they are not writing in a workbook or reading according to the prescribed class agenda for that day that they are not learning. Look for everyday times to teach them. Let their interests be a source of your teaching too.
With the changing seasons, now is the perfect time to write. Don’t think you need some special curriculum or an idea book. All you need is a pad of paper and a pen or pencil. Seeing everything outside changing and the wind blowing, it is a great opportunity to get outside and write a poem. Sit outside and sketch. Let them come up with some ideas of their own and some stories about the weather and the leaves.
I find this a wonderful opportunity to reinforce and strengthen our faith in God as the Creator. We can use many different things in nature to talk to them about what we believe from the Bible. Letting them ask the questions and narrate the stories and the facts back to me gives me a great opportunity to find out what they are learning and also what interests them.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Prayer Requests
I was made aware of a Mom who found out today that her 19 year-old son was cleaning his gun and accidentally shot himself and died. Please remember this family. They are not Believers, and are being ministered to by a local church as they suffer through this time. He leaves behind a child and a wife, and this has got to be one of those times you just want to wake up from the nightmare.
Linda I. of Beginning Our Journey just found out her son, Tristan, has Leukemia. Tristan is only two-years-old. If you would like to encourage Linda right now, I know she could use some encouraging words. Many moms know the despair and loss she is facing, and many of us do not. I don’t think you have to understand to tell her you are sorry and you are praying for her and Tristan and the whole family.
Chrissy of Moving the Mountain is battling depression right now, and could really use some encouragement. Last year she had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor.
Six-year-old Sean has been battling cancer since August 2006.
Also, remember Heather and her family in your prayers.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Here is a last Homeschool Tip for you:
Amanda and I are moderating the HSB Literary Club this time around, and I have read 3 chapters out of our book. It is The Hedge of Thorns, published by Lamplighter. This little 88p book packs a powerful punch in the literary and heartstrings area already.
We have been working hard, posting information about the time period in which this book was written and making up discussion questions you can use to share this treasure with your children.
If you are interested, please consider joining us. There is still time. We will be discussing chapters one through three this Wednesday. Please feel free to read it alone or as a read-aloud with your children. I am in love with Lamplighter books now. They are definitely at the top of my Wish List!
This classic book was written in 1611 and is based on a true story of a young boy who learns the hard way that the choices we make can harm those we love the most. Because he desperately wants to know what is on the other side of a hedge of thorns, he puts his little sister in great danger. From his experience, we learn that God places boundaries in our lives because He loves us.

How Can You Stand It?
Written by carrie on November 16, 2007 – 12:00 am -
One night at my part-time job, a fellow employee had overheard me telling someone we homeschool. She came up to me and said, “Really? How can you stand being with your kids all the time?”
Shocked as I was at the way she worded her question and the emphasis she placed on the words stand and all the time, part of me knew exactly where she was coming from. Before I placed my judgement on her for
#1 not having any kids of her own, and therefore that places her in the “I Know Everything About Kids, But Have None Of My Own” phase,
and
#2 insulting the very sacred rite of homeschoolers because we all are “holy and above it all” and therefore love every minute we spend with those darling little lumps of clay entrusted to us by Heaven Above.
No, after my twinge of judgement passed, I told her, “Well, it’s not easy, but I don’t know any better.” My standard answer since I’ve never had mine in public school.
But, occasionally I have these monumental moments of stress, where fire shoots out of my mouth and my eyes bulge, and I start spinning around the house like Taz, the tasmanian devil. It’s then I realize that I haven’t had any time alone.
Apparently my tried and true list of “kid-free” places haven’t been working out for me lately. Places like:
- Church. Baby in the nursery. Kids in children’s church. Me sitting in a pew trying to focus on the sermon, but find that I can’t because I have no interruptions to tend to and my mind wanders to strange and unusual places.
- The Bathroom. All Moms know this is not an alone place. Yet we all try to revisit it over and over. I know I do.
- A Part Time Job: Where mothers and their children shop. It never used to bother me when other people’s kids cried and whined. Because I could leave. But when you’re stuck behind a register and the kid is screaming right in front of you while you do a 184 item ring up, there’s just no peace in that.
- Bedtime. Some of us have husbands that are still up after the kids go to bed. Mine doesn’t usually bother me too much, but just when I’ve started to unwind, he’ll pressure me into watching a lecture on The History Of South America.
So, as you can see, I’m a bit anemic in the area of good ideas for down time. I’m a homebody, and it takes a crowbar and a good amount of WD40 to get me out at all. But I need it! And when I do make the attempt at a soire with friends, I’m so glad I did.
As homeschoolers, and stay at home moms of wee ones, we have to unite! Form a Mom’s Night Out once a month. Then GO. Or go by yourself, for crying out loud. Drink fattening coffee drinks and read a mindless magazine.
Because we are in it for the long haul, folks. Homeschooling is not a sprint, it’s an epic voyage. And the bathroom just isn’t the place for rejuvenation.

Thursday Thoughts
Written by Trish on November 15, 2007 – 12:00 am -Food for thought:
Love is not a feeling. It is an overwhelming passion to help and bless and deliver and comfort and strengthen and give joy to others just as the Lord Jesus always did. ~ Hannah Hurnard
“For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from His love.” Romans 8:38
